Pre-School Family Holidays in Italy in September/October: Why Umbria Is the Perfect Choice

If you’re looking for a family holiday in Italy in September or early October, Umbria could be the perfect choice! Warm weather, beautiful countryside, fewer crowds and much lower prices make this one of our favourite times of year at Umbria with Kids.

For families with babies, toddlers and pre-school children who aren’t restricted by school holidays, September in particular offers many of the benefits of an Italian summer holiday, without the peak-season prices and crowds of July and August. We also offer fully flexible arrival and departure days so you can choose the best value travel options to suit you and, with direct flights to Perugia airport only 30 minutes from us, we’re closer than you think!

Enjoy September sunshine and our swimming pools

Summer certainly doesn’t end in Umbria when August does. September typically brings plenty of warm, sunny weather, perfect for eating outside, exploring the countryside and spending lazy days around the pool.

At Umbria with Kids / Pian di Cascina, our swimming pool and heated children’s splash pool remain very much open throughout September. So do our other family-friendly facilities on-site, including our shaded playpark with swings, ride-on toys, playhouse, slide and lots more for the little ones to safely enjoy.

Our choice of eight family-friendly holiday apartments at Pian di Cascina give parents and children plenty of space to enjoy the Umbrian countryside and a truly comfortable home-from-home.

Lower prices for your family holiday in beautiful Umbria

One of the biggest advantages of travelling to Italy at this time of year is the price. Once the main European school holidays finish, our accommodation prices fall considerably. You can enjoy the same apartments, ambience, grounds and facilities as our peak season July & August guests, but at substantially lower rates.

The savings don’t necessarily stop with your accommodation

Flights to Italy can also become cheaper after the peak summer getaway, while car hire can offer much better value. Travelling outside the busiest weeks can therefore make a significant difference to the total cost of your family holiday in Umbria.

Italy with toddlers – without the summer crowds

If you’re planning a holiday to Italy with toddlers or pre-school children, avoiding the busiest weeks has another major advantage: everything becomes a little easier.

Pian di Cascina, where we are located is a beautifully converted and refurbished 17th century farmstead set in 20 acres of private land and, with so much to do here on-site, we find that many of our guests with very young children don’t feel the need to venture out!

So you may find yourself very tempted to just stay here at Pian di Cascina, enjoying the pool, letting the children play and settling into the slower pace of life in the Italian countryside – with maybe an occasional stroll or 5 minute car trip to the local villages of Carbonesca and Casa Castalda.

For those that do wish to get out and explore, popular local Umbrian destinations including Assisi, Perugia, Gubbio and Lake Trasimeno are quieter than during peak summer.

There are fewer crowds, restaurants are less hectic and exploring Italy’s beautiful hilltop towns with young children can be much more relaxing.

Cheaper flights and flexible arrival days

Finding affordable flights can make a huge difference to the cost of a holiday in Italy. That’s one reason we don’t insist on traditional Saturday-to-Saturday bookings.

At Umbria with Kids, you can arrive on any day of the week, subject to availability, and stays can be as short as four nights.

That gives you much more freedom to search for the best-value flights rather than having your travel dates dictated by your accommodation.

Visiting us outside the July/August peak also means quieter airports, less congested roads and better-value car hire.

Umbria is often described as Tuscany’s quieter neighbour — and with good reason. You’ll find stunning landscapes, historic hilltop towns, and incredible food, but without the crowds, queues, and high prices. It’s a more authentic Italian experience, where you can explore at your own pace rather than feeling the pressure to rush around and “tick off” tourist hotspots. Forget high-rise hotels, busy roads, and packed tourist attractions. Here, you’re surrounded by nature: the sounds of birdsong, the scent of wild herbs, and panoramic countryside views. It’s a place to truly switch off, recharge, and enjoy quality family time away from the hustle and bustle.
