our location

Villa Pian di Cascina is a renovated 16th century Umbrian farmstead, set in 20 acres of privately owned idyllic countryside. It is ideally located for family holidays and travel with kids.

We are an oasis of rest and relaxation, in the midst of olive groves, herb gardens, fig, walnut and oak trees. At an altitude of 600m asl,
you can experience a moderate, more refreshing climate, even on the hottest summer’s day. We are completely set up for families with children of all ages and near to amenities, (shops, restaurants, and walking distance from a village) we are only 15 minutes from a hospital with an A&E and pediatric ward and are less than 1 hour drive from 2 airports offering flights from the UK – we are ideally located for travel with kids.

The villa is 2.5 km from the village of Casa Castalda, which has a variety of shops including, a butchers, cheese shop, bakers and 2 grocery stores and a short walk from Carbonesca, which has a bar and a small shop.

The farm is nestled in the hills of Valfabbrica. The wonderful medieval town of Gubbio is only 25 minutes drive away and Assisi is a 15 km picturesque drive from the house. Perugia, Rome, Florence and Siena are all a suitable distance for a day trip.

The villa is ideally placed for several airports, ideal for travel with kids. The nearest one at Perugia is only half an hours drive away. Ancona is less than an hour away. Rome is a little over 2 hours drive from the villa – with a very easy drive straight up the A1 motorway. Rimini, Bologna, Pisa and Florence airports are also ideally placed for visiting Villa Pian Di Cascina.

Travel Options

by air

If you are flying from the UK (south)- Our recommended airport is Ancona from London Stansted. Ryan Air fly at least once a day (often twice on Saturdays). Ancona is a brand new airport and is small and efficient – and is ideally located for travel with kids. Ancona is less than 1 hour drive from the villa.

The nearest airport for direct flights from London is Perugia, which is less than half an hour’s drive from the house. Saturday flights are only available for selected dates in July and August. Ryan Air offer the only direct flight from the UK to Perugia from Stansted at the moment, but there are upcoming plans for new routes with Easy Jet. This airport is ideal for travel with kids, as it is small and efficient – you can expect to have your bags and car hire within an hour.

Ryan Air also fly into Bologna, Pisa and Rome – all are a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from the villa.

other options: for travel with kids

Bologna
Forli airport with Ryan Air or British Airways (among other airlines) makes the drive to the house about 3 hours.

Pisa airport is about 3 hours drive away and Easy Jet, Jet 2 and Ryan Air among other airlines, fly to Pisa.

Rome airport is only a 2.5 hour drive from the house.

Florence Airport is 2.5 hours drive from the house (Air France from London City, Veuling and British Airways)

If you are flying direct from America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, you can fly into Rome and either drive (2.5 hours) or get a connecting flight to Perugia airport (25 mins drive) or fly into Bologna (3 hours)

We recommend you hire a car from the airport you fly into, as many of the airlines do discount car hire if you book with the company of their choice. However, we can arrange a taxi service to pick you up, should you wish not to drive (additional charge applies). Travel with kids can be made easier by planning ahead – see our handy Travel with Kids Check List

car hire

We recommend you hire a car whilst you are in Italy. There is public transport, but a lot of the most interesting villages in Umbria are off the beaten track, and therefore a car is essential.
We recommend Hertz – they offer a better service in Italy than most. If you join their members club – you get fast track pick up and can avoid the queues during peak times at the busier airports like Rome

Hertz are usually a good company to hire from – you can book on-line and the prices are reasonable and cars are generally in good condition.

We recommend that you take out fully comprehensive insurance on your hire car.
Please check that your car is in full working order, before you leave the airport.
Driving in Italy is generally just like the rest of Europe, however, accidents can happen and it’s better to be fully covered.
If you have special requirements such as child car seats, roof racks etc… make sure you book them well before you arrive, as a lot of the airport car hire companies are small franchises and don’t carry more than one of each of the extra items. If you require car seats, it is a really good idea to bring your own – most major airlines will carry 1 buggy and 1 car seat per child for free. (Please check with your chosen airline before you travel for full details of the child baggage allowances) Bringing your own car seat really makes travel with kids easier – you know how to fit it, you know it is safe & fits your child. by car

From the UK the drive takes about two days.
The best route is to take the ferry to Calais and drive down through France on the toll motorways through the Mount Blanc tunnel into Italy. There are reasonable hotels at Macon or near Geneva, both ideal places to stop for the night.
Once in Italy, it’s a fairly direct route through the Aosta valley to Bologna and Fano.
Please contact us for further details, should you wish to drive.

by rail

The nearest railway station is at Fossato Di Vico (20 mins drive from the house). There are several direct trains from Rome. You can also arrive into Perugia by train from Rome, Florence and the north of Italy. Perugia is a 35 minute taxi ride from the villa. Trains in Italy are an inexpensive & environmentally sound form of transport, they are ideal for travel with kids, as you can walk around, entertain your child and see the view go by – if your children don’t like travelling by car – why not consider the train…

directions

When you book your holiday we will send you step by step directions telling you how to get to Villa Pian Di Cascina from our nearest village of Casa Castalda – we highly recommend you plan your trip to Casa Castalda using www.viamichelin.com – they provide detailed, up to date route maps and driving directions for travel throughout Europe.
